In The Plains with Jayson Jones: ‘Steady and Dependable’

AUBURN, Ala. – Although defensive tackle Jayson Jones hasn’t spent his entire collegiate career on the Plains, he is poised to leave a lasting impact as he enters his final season with the Tigers.

Jones, originally from Calera, Alabama, began his college career at the University of Oregon, where he played in 13 games in 2021 on the defensive line, recording 19 tackles and two sacks. He eventually decided to transfer, a difficult choice he feels confident was the right one, choosing Auburn as his final collegiate destination.

“Auburn was close to home, but really it was the people that made me want to come,” Jones said. “The fans have all been so kind and welcoming. When people say, ‘If you love Auburn, it will love you back,’ they are not lying. It is true.”

Jones’ passion for football began early, stepping onto a field for the first time at age 5. “My dad asked me if I wanted to play football and I had nothing else to do so I thought sure, why not?” Jones said. “I picked it back up when I was in middle school and haven’t stopped playing since.”

He attributes his enduring passion for football to its competitive nature, the camaraderie among teammates, and the personal satisfaction from his on-field performance.

At Calera High School, Jones played for head coach Trey Simpson, was a four-year letterman, team captain, and earned a top 10 recruiting ranking in Alabama.

Since joining the Tigers, Jones has become a consistent force on the defensive line, playing in every game over his two seasons with the team.

A frequent starter at nose tackle, Jones has accumulated 48 total tackles in his 25 games with the Tigers. His imposing presence has been a challenge for opposing offensive lines, and his passion for the game has continued to grow.

“I love to go out there on defense and just hit people,” Jones said with a laugh. “I also just love the competitiveness and the teamwork you have to build and how you have to really trust the people beside you.”

Like many Auburn football players, Jones considers Jordan-Hare Stadium one of the best atmospheres in college football and has particularly enjoyed playing night games there.

“Everyone should get the chance to experience a night game in Jordan-Hare,” Jones said. “I will never forget the night game against Texas A&M during the 2022 season. We had a losing record of 3-5 at the time, but the fans all showed up and supported us throughout the whole game to help us get the win. I will not forget the atmosphere in the stadium that night.”
