When Seiya Suzuki departed the game early on Friday due to tightness in his oblique, the Chicago Cubs faced yet another injury scare.

Since Suzuki has already lost time this season due to injury, the Cubs couldn’t afford to lose a guy who they signed to a five-year, $85 million contract because of their mediocre offense.

The product of Japan has had setbacks, but in his three seasons, he has emerged as one of the team’s finest hitters. His greatest season was 2023, when he slashed.285/.357/.485 with 20 home runs and a 126 OPS+.

The 29-year-old appears to be continuing where he left off, slashing, in 153 at-bats this season.261/.326/.458 with an OPS+ of 120 and seven home homers.
