BREAKING: Birmingham City, QPR, and Wrexham are targeting a free transfer for the World Cup midfielder.

Birmingham City are reportedly interested in signing Joe Morrell, the out-of-contract Portsmouth midfielder.

Phil Cadden, a journalist covering the Welsh national team for The Sun, reports that Birmingham City, along with QPR and Wrexham, are pursuing the Welsh player. Morrell is expected to leave Fratton Park this summer after Portsmouth decided not to activate a one-year extension on his contract.

Birmingham City and QPR fight it out for free agent

According to The News, Morrell’s future at Portsmouth is uncertain. The club wants him to stay and is in talks with him, but they recognize the risk of losing him for free if a deal isn’t reached soon.

Morrell will officially become a free agent on June 30. With his contract expiring soon, he is free to negotiate with other clubs. Currently, he is rehabilitating at Portsmouth’s training ground from a knee injury that has sidelined him since February.

The 27-year-old has extensive experience in League One, having made 121 appearances in the division. This season, he played 27 times for Portsmouth as they won the league title. He has also played for Cheltenham Town, Lincoln City, and Luton Town, starting his career at Bristol City.

Morrell has 37 caps for Wales, including two appearances at the 2022 World Cup. He is an international teammate of Birmingham City’s Jordan James. James, who is being targeted by several Premier League clubs, replaced Morrell in the Wales starting lineup after Morrell was suspended and has since struggled to regain his place.
