Angels Make Major Roster Changes, Designate Two Players for Assignment

The Angels made significant roster changes on Monday by designating pitcher Jose Suarez and infielder Cole Tucker for assignment. Suarez, who joined the organization in 2014, and Tucker, who had been with the team for two months, were both cut.

Suarez, a 26-year-old left-hander, gave up five runs in just one inning during Sunday’s game in San Francisco. This season, he holds a 1-2 record with an 8.15 ERA.

The game against the Giants marked the end for Suarez, who had a solid performance from 2021-22 with a 16-16 record and a 3.86 ERA (110 ERA+), but struggled to maintain that form over the past two seasons. This year, he split time between the rotation and the bullpen, but his command issues (22 walks in 35.1 innings) and being hit hard when throwing strikes (44 hits) led to his struggles.

In response, the Angels promoted Zach Plesac from Triple-A Salt Lake. Plesac, a right-hander, had a 3-7 record with a 5.42 ERA in 13 starts but showed potential in his last two starts, giving up only two runs and seven hits over 15.1 innings. Plesac, 29, joined the Angels on a minor league deal in January after five seasons with the Cleveland Guardians.

Additionally, the Angels activated veteran infielder Brandon Drury from the injured list. Prior to straining his left hamstring, Drury had played 30 games, hitting .173 with a .230 on-base percentage and a .240 slugging percentage. Drury revealed in May that he had been playing through the injury for weeks.
