Am leaving: Longtime Angels Broadcaster Slams Owner announces his retirement as he is about to…..
Arte Moreno, owner of the Los Angeles Angels, continues to bear the brunt of criticism for the team’s prolonged struggles over the past decade. Criticisms range from accusations of insufficient spending to a revolving door of general managers and managers. There’s also been controversy over the team’s name changes, from Anaheim Angels to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and then to simply the Los Angeles Angels. As a result, Moreno has become one of the least popular owners in baseball.
Recently, former Angels broadcaster Victor Rojas joined the chorus of critics. Rojas, who served as the team’s play-by-play broadcaster from 2010 to 2020, expressed frustration with the status quo. He suggested that after 13 or 14 years of the same issues persisting on and off the field, it’s time for a fresh approach. Rojas questioned why the team hadn’t made significant changes earlier, and he criticized the hiring of former players Torii Hunter and Chuck Finley to front-office roles as superficial gestures rather than substantive improvements.
The general manager position has seen frequent turnover over the years, but the constants have been Arte Moreno and team president John Carpino, who has been in his role since November 2009. It’s evident that significant changes are necessary for the Angels to reclaim the success they enjoyed when Moreno first purchased the team shortly after their 2002 World Series victory. Without these changes, both Moreno and the Angels will likely continue to face criticism and remain unsuccessful.
