The general manager’s priorities have shifted significantly in the past year. Last summer, he was focused on rebuilding a lottery team. This year, after leading the team to the NBA Finals, his task involves fewer adjustments.

“Our core will remain mostly unchanged, but our goal is continuous improvement,” Harrison stated on Friday. “Our job is to always strive to get better. This year, instead of a major overhaul, we aim for a 10 to 15 percent improvement. When you miss the playoffs, like last year, desperation kicks in. But after making the Finals, the focus is on incremental improvements.”

The Mavericks’ strategy is to build from within after a strong playoff performance, culminating in a Finals loss to a formidable Boston Celtics team. Despite the loss, the Mavericks are proud of their season and view it as a foundation for future success. Harrison emphasized that everyone must improve by 10 to 15 percent, highlighting this in his end-of-season news conference.

“We’re proud of our season and committed to building a championship-caliber team,” Harrison said. “We want everyone to return 10 to 15 percent better in mind, body, and spirit. Our top seven or eight players are under contract, except for Derrick Jones Jr., who had a breakthrough season and is now a priority for re-signing.”

Regarding Jones, Harrison said, “We must figure out how to keep him. He’s our top priority. He fits our team well and loves it here.”

During a 20-minute interview, Harrison touched on several topics. He believes Luka Dončić, despite facing heavy scrutiny and injuries, will continue to improve and play for his national team. Harrison also sees a bright future for Dereck Lively II, who needs rest after a demanding rookie season but has significant potential.

On the coaching front, Harrison hopes to retain assistants Sean Sweeney and Jared Dudley, acknowledging their importance while supporting their career growth.

Reflecting on the long playoff run, Harrison noted its toll on both players and staff, emphasizing the need for rest and mental preparation for the next season. He also highlighted the invaluable playoff experience gained by players like P.J. Washington, predicting that it will benefit the team in the future.
