DONE DEAL: Contract details of new Sheffield Wednesday signing revealed after he turned down Middlesbrough….
Max Lowe, who is set to join Sheffield Wednesday, spoke with a rival Championship club before deciding on Hillsborough, according to The Star. The Derbyshire-born left-back was confirmed as a new Owls signing last week and will officially join as a free agent once his contract with Bramall Lane ends this month. Lowe is the second summer signing for Wednesday, following the addition of experienced goalkeeper Ben Hamer.
The Star first reported Lowe’s transfer, marking the first senior player move from Blades to Owls in 73 years. Further details have now emerged about the 27-year-old’s transfer. It is understood that Lowe consulted several Championship clubs, including Middlesbrough, before a conversation with Danny Röhl persuaded him to sign with Wednesday.
Additionally, The Star revealed that Lowe has signed a two-year contract with Wednesday, breaking the club’s recent practice of including extension options in their deals. This contract will take Lowe into his 30th year. This transfer is the first of a senior player from S2 to S6 since George Underwood’s £1,000 move in 1951. According to Owls historian Jason Dickinson, Underwood was one of only three first-team players to make this switch in the 135-year history of the clubs, following William Mellor in 1893 and Bernard ‘Bunny’ Oxley in 1934.
