Derby County manager Paul Warne has labeled Dutch midfielder Kenzo Goudmijn as a great deal as he works to rebuild the Rams in the “crazy” English transfer market.

The 22-year-old, who has become Derby’s fourth summer signing, was acquired for a reported 820,000 euros (£690,000) from Eredivisie club AZ Alkmaar.

Warne explained that the team will continue to focus on international recruits to find better value, aiming to make at least eight more additions to his squad before their Championship return.

“The English market is through the roof, with players being too expensive for what we’re looking for, so we knew we had to look abroad,” Warne said regarding the search that led to Goudmijn.

“Ten weeks ago, we were told it would be too costly, but we kept persisting. Eventually, it became more affordable and compared to the English market, it feels like he’s a bargain, so it was an obvious choice.

“Everyone is exploring different markets to get better value for money.”
