Maple Leafs sign defenceman Timothy Liljegren to two-year deal - The Athletic

On the eve of free agency, the Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed defenseman Timothy Liljegren to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $3 million, the club announced Sunday.

Liljegren, 25, played in 55 games for the Maple Leafs last season, recording three goals and 20 assists. The 2017 first-round pick appeared in six of the seven games in Toronto’s first-round loss to the Boston Bruins, averaging 17:52 of ice time.

Ahead of the unrestricted free agent signing period starting at noon ET on Monday, the Maple Leafs are looking to strengthen their defense beyond just Liljegren. On Saturday, they acquired the signing rights to defenseman Chris Tanev from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick and prospect Max Ellis.

Toronto correctly anticipated that Tanev would attract several suitors as a free agent. The veteran, a sought-after right-shot defender, would immediately assume a top-pairing role for the Maple Leafs. Toronto has been eager to find a new partner for Morgan Rielly, and Tanev could be the ideal fit.
