After finishing fifth last season and losing 3-1 on aggregate to Southampton in the EFL Championship playoff semi-finals, West Brom are preparing for their fourth consecutive campaign in England’s second division.

Their pre-season kicked off last week with a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Bolton Wanderers, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for Carlos Corberan’s team.

Although the result has no lasting significance, Corberan may be disappointed by the loss to weaker opposition. However, there were several positives for the Baggies boss to take from the game. Summer signings Ousmane Diakite and Torbjorn Heggem made their debuts in the second half, with Diakite particularly impressing, while Jayson Molumby also saw his first minutes since New Year’s Day.

Corberan is now looking forward to their upcoming friendly against Peterborough, hoping for an improved performance and result against another League One team.

Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough also experienced defeat in their League One playoff semi-final against Oxford United, setting them up for a third consecutive season in the third division.

After losing in the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, Peterborough hope to secure promotion to the Championship in 2024-25. They have already played three pre-season matches, losing 1-0 to AFC Wimbledon, drawing 0-0 with Wingate & Finchley, and recently defeating Spalding United 7-0.

Ferguson aims to build on that dominant victory with a strong performance in their upcoming pre-season games against West Brom, Boston United, Stamford, Colchester United, and Notts County, setting the stage for a promising start to the new League One campaign.
