1. FC Nürnberg has announced the appointment of Germany’s record goalscorer Miroslav Klose as their new head coach.

This marks Klose’s first coaching role in Germany, following his stint with SCR Altach in Austria. He also has experience as an assistant to Hansi Flick with the national team and coaching Bayern Munich’s under-17 team.

On joining Der Club, Klose said: “Tradition, passion, honest work, great fans – these are all things that I love about football and that I associate with 1. FC Nürnberg. That’s why the opportunity to become a coach here immediately appealed to me. The club has a great foundation with its junior work, which we want to build on further. I have known and appreciated Joti for many years. We are on the same wavelength both personally and in our football philosophy. Now it’s time to get started, tackle it, and set the season on the right track.”

Nürnberg recently underwent structural changes with the departure of former head coach and director Dieter Hecking, who was replaced by Joti Chatzialexiou. Appointing the former Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich striker is Chatzialexiou’s first major move in his new role.

Klose takes over from Cristian Fiél, who has become the new head coach of Hertha Berlin. In his sole season with Nürnberg, Fiél led the team to an underwhelming 12th place finish in the 2. Bundesliga, with the standout performances of Can Uzun being a highlight.

One challenge Klose will face as Nürnberg head coach is the departure of Uzun in the summer, which will leave a significant gap in the team’s attacking prowess. Replacing Uzun’s firepower will be a key task for Klose.
