Davenport entered free agency this offseason and left Minnesota to join the Lions on a one-year deal worth $6.5 million, with a maximum value of $10.5 million. Despite Aaron Glenn’s defense leading Detroit to the NFC Championship game, the team ended the 2023 regular season needing a more reliable pass rush.

Last season, defensive end Aidan Hutchinson recorded 11.5 sacks, while former Saints linebacker Alex Anzalone was the team’s top tackler with 129. James Houston IV spent most of the season injured after suffering an ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks. The Jackson State product had 8.0 sacks in the 2022 season after spending nearly half the season on Detroit’s practice squad.

At the start of his tenure in Detroit, Marcus Davenport is already facing challenges. Injuries affected most of his five-year career with New Orleans. With the Vikings, he played in only four games, starting three, and recorded seven tackles, two sacks, four QB hits, and two tackles for losses. Throughout his NFL career, Davenport has started 35 of 67 games, tallying 149 tackles, 23.5 sacks, 27 tackles for losses, and 64 QB hits.
