LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — The route to Bayer Leverkusen’s stadium has unofficially been renamed Xabi Alonso Avenue by fans.
It was along this path that supporters gathered to welcome the highly sought-after coach and his team on their bus before the 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday, which clinched Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title.
“The atmosphere on the way to the stadium was incredible. You could feel that the fans were completely confident we would succeed,” Alonso remarked.
Amidst the celebration, Alonso’s challenge was to channel his team’s excitement positively. “We talked in the locker room about turning this energy into something positive.”
The name change isn’t official yet—currently, it’s just a fan’s sticker covering the existing Bismarckstrasse sign. However, if Alonso manages to secure the German Cup and the Europa League by the end of the season, who knows? This would be quite a feat in his first senior coaching role.
