HAMBURG – Alexander Blessin has been named the new coach of Bundesliga club St Pauli Hamburg, following their promotion, the team announced on Thursday.

While the club did not disclose the length of his contract, media reports suggest that Blessin signed a three-year deal after moving from Belgium’s Royal Union Saint-Gilloise, where he previously coached.

Blessin, 51, will take over from Fabian Hürzeler, who has joined Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion.

“The club stands for clear values and ambitious work in professional sport, so coaching the team in the Bundesliga after a long time in the second division is a fantastic assignment,” Blessin was quoted in a club statement.

His contract with Saint-Gilloise was originally set to run until 2025, and reports indicate that St Pauli will pay a takeover fee of less than €1 million ($1.07 million) for his services. Blessin is relatively unknown in Germany, having played seven Bundesliga matches for VfB Stuttgart and served as a coach for RB Leipzig’s under-17 and under-19 teams before moving abroad to Belgium’s Oostende and Italy’s Genoa.

Last year, he joined Saint-Gilloise and led them to their first Belgian Cup title in over a century and a second-place finish in the league.

“In Alexander Blessin, we have secured a coach with international experience for St Pauli. He possesses extensive tactical knowledge and has worked at the highest level in Belgium, Italy, and on the European stage,” said sporting director Andreas Bornemann.
