St. Pauli is making a strong push for promotion, led by their American-born head coach who is quickly becoming one of the top talents in German soccer.

Every club globally is on the lookout for the next Julian Nagelsmann, seeking the young coaching prodigy who can transform past on-field experiences into brilliance on the sidelines.

St. Pauli has discovered their own hidden gem in Fabian Hurzeler, an American by birth. While his American origins are just a small part of his story, Hurzeler acknowledges that they have contributed to his success.

At just 31, Hurzeler is guiding St. Pauli toward the Bundesliga. For context, he is three years younger than Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos, and the same age as Antonio Rudiger and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Having played alongside Emre Can as a youth at Bayern Munich, his rapid rise is remarkable.

Hurzeler has noticed the comparisons to figures like Nagelsmann and appreciates the recognition. However, he understands that this is just the beginning. While he is currently seen as a coaching prodigy, he has larger goals.

“I must remain humble,” Hurzeler says. “I need to forge my own path. There’s still much to learn, from reading the game to handling media. It’s crucial that I stay true to myself and create my own identity. If I achieve as much as Nagelsmann, I’ll be content.”
