The 1000 IQ reason why Max Verstappen has taken a penalty in three Belgian Grands Prix despite taking pole

After an impressive start to the 2024 Formula 1 season, reigning world champion Verstappen has faced challenges in recent weeks.

The Dutchman has not won a race in over a month, having been outperformed by George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Oscar Piastri recently.

Ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, it was announced that Verstappen received a 10-place grid penalty for exceeding his allowed number of engine components.

This marks the third consecutive year that Verstappen has received a grid penalty at this event.

Despite this, the 25-year-old won the last two Belgian Grands Prix, starting from 14th and sixth positions, respectively.

According to Autosport, “Verstappen has been burdened with grid penalties at the last two Belgian events, as Spa’s long straights and lengthy acceleration zones facilitate overtaking, especially for faster cars starting from lower positions.”

The design and nature of Spa-Francorchamps allow Red Bull to take such risks, confident that Verstappen can work his way to the front during the race.

Verstappen set the fastest time in qualifying but will start in 11th place due to his penalty, with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc taking pole position ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

After qualifying, Verstappen commented: “It was a nice qualifying. Fortunately, the weather was manageable. It was just a bit rainy, allowing us to have a decent qualifying session. I’m very happy with how the car performed in the wet conditions. I could complete my laps and set clean times, which is always tricky in the wet.”

He added, “Tomorrow will be a different day with warmer weather and likely no rain. The focus will be on tire degradation, and we need to ensure we handle that well.”
