Defending Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova joined Steffi Graf in the record books after suffering a surprising first-round loss to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, going down in straight sets. Vondrousova, who unexpectedly won the title at the All England Club last year, returned to Centre Court on Tuesday but struggled physically, losing 6-4, 6-2 in just 67 minutes.

This defeat made Vondrousova only the second women’s defending champion at Wimbledon to be eliminated in the first round, following Graf’s 1994 loss to Lori McNeil.

Before her 2023 triumph, Vondrousova had only secured one main-draw win at Wimbledon and came to London following an injury scare in Berlin two weeks earlier. Despite claiming to be fully fit before the tournament, the world number six struggled with her serve, committing three double-faults in her first service game and being broken immediately.
