Brighton's Pascal Gross to sign for Borussia Dortmund

Pascal Groß is a great example that football careers don’t end at 30. At 31, he became a key player for Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton & Hove Albion, impressing fans worldwide. By 32, he earned his debut with the German national team and adapted through the transition from Hansi Flick to Julian Nagelsmann. Now at 33, he is set to return to the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Dortmund will pay Brighton €7 million upfront, with an additional €7 million in bonuses. Groß was under contract with Brighton until June 30, 2025, so the club secures a substantial fee rather than losing him for free next year.

The versatile midfielder, who featured briefly in this summer’s European Championship, has been playing abroad since 2017, having last played in Germany for Ingolstadt 04. It’s notable how Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton team has seen significant changes over two seasons: De Zerbi is now with Olympique Marseille, Moisés Caicedo and Robert Sánchez are at Chelsea, Alexis Mac Allister is at Liverpool, and Adam Lallana has moved to Southampton. Some key players from that successful era, like Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson, still remain.
