Carlos Alcaraz achieved a historic milestone at Roland Garros on Sunday, and after a grueling weekend of clay-court tennis, it’s likely that rest was a priority for him. The 21-year-old became the youngest man to win major titles on three different surfaces by defeating Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 in a thrilling French Open final that lasted 4 hours and 15 minutes.

This victory adds the prestigious clay-court title to his previous wins at the US Open in 2022 and Wimbledon last year. Given his heritage, this triumph seems particularly special for him.

For Australians, Wimbledon is the pinnacle of tennis achievement, but for those raised on Europe’s red clay courts, the Musketeers Cup at Roland Garros is the ultimate prize.

“Winning a Grand Slam is always special. Winning your first in each Grand Slam is even more so,” Alcaraz said. “But to win at Roland Garros, with all the Spanish players who have claimed this title, and to see my name on that list is unbelievable. It’s something I’ve dreamed of since I started playing tennis at five or six years old. It’s an incredible feeling.”

Alcaraz not only has the ability to dazzle with his play, but he also has impressive stamina. His victory over Zverev came after a five-set battle with the new world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Friday. He is the first player in the Open era to win his final two matches on the way to the Roland Garros title in five sets, a feat last accomplished by Australian legend Rod Laver in 1962.
