Captain Temba Bavuma and Tony de Zorzi stood out for South Africa as the hosts methodically worked their way to 344-8 by the end of day two in their Test match against the West Indies.

After a rain-disrupted first day that allowed only 15 overs, both teams adopted a more cautious approach at Queens Park Oval on Thursday.

De Zorzi, who resumed on 32, reached 78 by lunch, contributing steadily before falling to Jomel Warrican (3-66). Tristan Stubbs (20) and Ryan Rickelton (19) were dismissed by Kemar Roach (2-53), while Bavuma provided some solidity, scoring 86 off 182 balls with seven fours before being removed by Jaylen Seales (2-57).

Although West Indies started slowly, they managed to limit South Africa to just 20 runs in 12 overs against Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder, with Warrican later claiming Verreynne and Keshav Maharaj (0). South Africa avoided a late collapse thanks to Mulder’s unbeaten 37, edging closer to 350 ahead of day three.

De Zorzi notched his second half-century for South Africa, again against the West Indies, having previously made a career-best 85 at Centurion in January. Despite struggling with the ball for much of the day, the West Indies will look to improve on day three, with Roach’s two wickets bringing his Test tally to 272.
