A few weeks later, she reached the Wimbledon final before announcing her retirement, with injuries hastening the end of her illustrious career. On the men’s side, Andre Agassi, at 29, finally claimed the only Grand Slam title missing from his record, shedding tears of joy after his victory in Paris. This dual triumph would ultimately transform both their lives.

Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi, both tennis royalty, had known each other for years. As Agassi revealed in his autobiography “Open,” he had long been drawn to the German tennis star. Their first official meeting took place in 1992 at Wimbledon, where both emerged as champions. Andre later confessed that he had always hoped for something more, but the timing was never right—until seven years later.

After Agassi’s triumph at Roland Garros, his coach Brad Gilbert made a bold prediction. “It’s destiny,” Brad told Andre, perhaps under the influence of a few drinks. “You won the 1999 men’s French Open, and who won on the women’s side? Yes, it’s your destiny to be together.” Gilbert even scribbled “2001: Steffi Agassi” on a piece of paper, predicting they would marry in 2001 and have their first child in 2002.
