Cristian Fiél is set to replace Pál Dardai as the head coach of Hertha Berlin, the club revealed on Thursday.

Fiél, who previously managed Nuremberg, has signed a contract with Hertha that extends until 2026.

Hertha’s sporting director, Benjamin Weber, expressed enthusiasm about Fiél’s appointment, noting, “Cristian’s attacking and dominant style, along with his straightforward and open approach, aligns perfectly with our vision. We are thrilled that he will be leading our team next season.”

Known for nurturing emerging talent, Fiél has seen young players like Can Uzun thrive under his guidance at Nuremberg.

The 44-year-old, who had a brief stint with Union Berlin during his playing career, favors an aggressive playing style. His primary challenge will be to strengthen Hertha’s vulnerable defense.

Since Fiél was still under contract with Nuremberg until 2025, Hertha will need to pay a transfer fee, which reports suggest is around €500,000 ($544,000).

Hertha had announced prior to their final match of the season against Osnabrück that Dardai’s contract as head coach would not be renewed, though he will stay with the club in a different role.

Hertha concluded their first season in the second division, following relegation in 2023, with a disappointing ninth-place finish.
