With newly-promoted Alemannia Aachen and Energie Cottbus joining the third tier next season, the 3. Liga has become even more enticing. While some fans might have hoped that 1. FC Kaiserslautern, a four-time champion with an average home crowd of over 40,000 at Betzenberg, would return, and that historic club MSV Duisburg would remain, there are still plenty of reasons to follow the 3. Liga in the 2024/25 season.
The upcoming season promises more derbies than ever in a league full of traditional clubs, including Arminia Bielefeld, VfL Osnabrück, 1860 Munich, Rot-Weiss Essen, and Dynamo Dresden. Will 1. FC Saarbrücken, who reached the DFB Pokal semi-finals, manage to advance to the second tier? Can 1860 Munich finally make their breakthrough? Will Dynamo Dresden, a powerhouse from Eastern Germany, live up to expectations? The league is set to be fiercely competitive once again.
For the 2024/25 season, the 3. Liga will feature Europe’s highest average attendance in the third tier, surpassing that of EFL League 1 with an average of 9,500 per game. This league continues to attract fans with its thrilling football and historic stadiums. It could be the most exciting 3. Liga season yet, with several Bundesliga veterans competing at the top.
This season’s 20-team division includes Alemannia Aachen, a former Bundesliga team that many neutrals have eagerly anticipated seeing again. Aachen’s return, along with the presence of Hansa Rostock, the 1990 East German league champions, adds significant historical interest. Rostock, relegated from the second tier, will have local derbies against Dynamo Dresden and Energie Cottbus, two clubs with a rich DDR-Oberliga history.
Fans will also look forward to visiting the Bielefelder Alm, the passionate home of Arminia Bielefeld. As the season unfolds, it will be interesting to see who emerges as the top contenders, the also-rans, and the potential relegation candidates.
