Pablo Casas’ absence from the Selknam roster for Super Rugby Americas 2024 is due to his move to Europe, where he now plays for Steaua Bucureşti in Romania. The 16-time capped Cóndor joins a growing list of Chilean players competing abroad.

Casas is the latest Chilean to secure a spot overseas, following center Domingo Saavedra, who is awaiting visa clearance to join NOLA Gold in Major League Rugby (MLR). Saavedra will team up with Chilean hooker Augusto Bohme at the club.

Chilean captain Martín Sigren has also made the move to MLR, joining the New England Freejacks for the 2024 season after leaving England’s Doncaster Knights. Meanwhile, fly-half/fullback Santiago Videla has signed with the Miami Sharks, making the upcoming MLR season particularly interesting for Chilean fans.

Casas isn’t the only Chilean playing in Europe. Iñaki Ayarza represents Charente in France’s Pro D2, while Matías Dittus plays for Périgueux. Vittorio Lastra is with Rovigo, and fly-half Rodrigo Fernández is at Petrarca.

This isn’t Casas’ first stint in Europe, as he has previously played in Portugal. Additionally, Chilean scrum-half Nicolás Herreros now plays for Agronomía in Portugal.
