Newcastle has renewed their interest in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, according to talkSPORT. The Magpies are reportedly looking to secure a loan deal with an obligation to buy to comply with PSR requirements.

Burnley previously rejected a £15 million offer for Trafford earlier in the transfer window. The 21-year-old goalkeeper made 28 appearances for Burnley last season as they were relegated from the Premier League. Although Trafford missed Burnley’s first Championship game this season, he returned to the lineup for their match against Sunderland.

Trafford is still a target for Newcastle

Trafford was initially part of England’s Euro 2024 squad but was later cut from Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man roster. Burnley manager Scott Parker recently addressed speculation about Trafford’s future, stating that the goalkeeper remains with the club and is currently their number one choice. However, Parker acknowledged that competition exists for the starting position and that Trafford’s future remains uncertain.

Parker also praised Trafford’s performance, noting his quality despite a challenging previous season. Burnley has already seen several players depart this summer, with Wilson Odobert and Sander Berge moving to Tottenham and Fulham, respectively, while Dara O’Shea and Arijanet Muric joined Ipswich, and winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson headed to the Saudi Pro League.
