Lauren James has been named a finalist for the FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11 for the first time in her career. The 22-year-old English forward made a significant impact on the international stage during the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

FIFPRO highlighted her remarkable achievements in 2023, noting her impressive performances both for her club and country. Her standout season earned her a nomination for the 2023 FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11.

James’ stellar displays for Chelsea, combined with her memorable performances at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, led her fellow professionals to vote overwhelmingly in her favor for a spot on the team of the year.

James faces competition from fellow forwards Jennifer Hermoso, Sam Kerr, Alex Morgan, Salma Paralluelo, Alexandra Popp, and Alessia Russo, who are also in the running for the World 11, based on their performances between 1 August 2022 and 20 August 2023.

The 2022/23 season was a breakthrough for James. In the four and a half matches she played at the Australia & New Zealand 2023 tournament, she made a significant impact, scoring three goals and providing three assists. However, her campaign was marred by a two-match suspension following a red card in the Round of 16 against Nigeria.

Remarkably, James’ journey with the Lionesses only began in September 2022, when she made her international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Austria.

At Chelsea, James contributed five goals and two assists, helping the team secure the league title. Her creativity and unpredictability in attack earned her the Young Player of the Year award. She also helped Chelsea win the Women’s FA Cup and England to claim the Finalissima 2023.

James has received several individual accolades during the 2022/23 season, including PFA Young Player of the Year 2023, Best Player at the Arnold Clark Cup 2023, and Young Player of the Year at the Women’s Football Awards.

This marks James’ first inclusion among the 23 finalists for the FIFA FIFPRO Women’s World 11. Since her professional debut with Manchester United in August 2018, she has shown continuous improvement. After joining Chelsea in 2021, James had a slow start, playing only six matches without starting. However, the 2022/23 season proved to be her breakthrough, solidifying her place as one of the top players in women’s football.
