Domenico Tedesco Signed: RB Leipzig Look To Protect $120 Million Investment

Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable 35-game unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga came to an end on Saturday as RB Leipzig staged a dramatic comeback to secure a 3-2 victory, with Loïs Openda scoring twice.

Leverkusen, the reigning champions, dominated the early stages of the match, with Jeremie Frimpong breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute with a close-range finish. Alejandro Grimaldo then doubled the lead just before halftime.

However, Leipzig responded with a goal from midfielder Kevin Kampl deep into first-half stoppage time. Openda then equalized in the 57th minute before scoring a stunning long-range effort that left Leverkusen’s goalkeeper Matej Kovar helpless.

Late in the game, there was a VAR review for a possible penalty for Leverkusen, but the referee ultimately decided that Castello Lukeba’s challenge on Patrik Schick did not warrant a penalty.

This defeat marked Leverkusen’s first loss in the Bundesliga in 462 days, with their last defeat coming against VfL Bochum in a 3-0 loss on the final day of the 2022-23 season.

Leverkusen, led by Xabi Alonso, were just one match away from equaling Hamburg’s 36-game unbeaten run from the 1982-83 season, which is the second-longest in history after Bayern Munich’s record 53-game streak under Pep Guardiola from 2012 to 2014.

The victory propelled Leipzig to the top of the table with six points, while Leverkusen dropped to ninth with three points.

Frimpong opened the scoring after receiving a long pass from Jonathan Tah, slipping the ball inside the near post. Grimaldo scored with his first touch, and Victor Boniface missed a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 just before halftime.

Leipzig gained momentum after Kampl’s diving header pulled a goal back, and Openda equalized shortly before the hour mark after a long pass from Benjamin Sesko. Openda then nutmegged Tapsoba to score the winner in the 80th minute.

Leipzig, who won their season opener 1-0 against Bochum, extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games, dating back to February.
