Navarro, who has reached her second career Grand Slam quarter-final and her first at the US Open, dominated the first set and was in control during the second, securing a break to lead 4-3 with a chance to serve for the set. However, nerves set in, allowing Gauff to win three consecutive games and push the match to a deciding third set.
In the final set, Gauff’s serve faltered, and Navarro capitalized by breaking her twice, ultimately securing a remarkable victory.
Navarro expressed her excitement courtside, saying, “I lost in the first round the last two years, and now making the quarter-finals is pretty insane. This is the city I was born in, and it feels so special to be playing here.” She praised Gauff, calling her an “amazing player” and predicting that she will win the tournament in the future.
Reflecting on the match, Navarro admitted, “It was tough losing the second set. I had chances at 30-0 at 4-3 but had a lull. I was able to regroup and come into the third set with a fresh mindset. I wanted to play aggressive tennis, and I think I was able to do that.”
Commenting on Gauff’s performance, Sky Sports Tennis’ Marion Bartoli noted, “It’s difficult to win a match with 19 double faults, but Navarro contributed to that by playing aggressively and pushing Coco far behind the baseline.”
Navarro will next face Paula Badosa, the 26th seed, who advanced to her second career Grand Slam quarter-final with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Yafan Wang of China. Badosa, who has battled injury and even considered retirement due to a stress fracture in her back, described her return to form as a “dream come true.”
Elsewhere, Grigor Dimitrov held off a comeback from Andrey Rublev to reach the US Open quarter-finals for the first time since 2019, winning 6-3, 7-6(3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3. Dimitrov credited his second-set tiebreak win as a key moment in the match, helping him maintain belief in his game and body.
In another match, Taylor Fritz overcame a slow start to defeat eighth seed Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, advancing to the US Open quarter-finals for the second consecutive year. Fritz, the 12th seed, will face either Brandon Nakashima or Alexander Zverev in the next round.
