Born in Terrassa, a suburb of Barcelona, Dani Olmo seemed destined for a stint at the renowned La Masia youth academy of FC Barcelona. He joined from city rivals Espanyol in 2007 at the age of seven. During his six years at La Masia, Olmo topped the scoring charts for his age group in four seasons. However, seeking further development, he left Barcelona and signed a professional contract with Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2014.
Olmo quickly demonstrated the skills that had piqued the interest of clubs across Europe. He was rapidly promoted to Zagreb’s first team and made his debut in February 2015 at just 16 years old. In June 2019, he was named Croatia’s Player of the Year and played a key role in Spain’s victory at the U21 European Championships, scoring three goals in the tournament, including one in the 2-1 final win over Germany. Olmo made his UEFA Champions League group stage debut in 2018 and went on to make 124 appearances for Zagreb, tallying 34 goals and 28 assists while playing various attacking roles. His preferred position is as a No. 10 behind the striker, a role he often occupied under former RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann after joining the German club midway through the 2020/21 season.
In that season, he made 32 Bundesliga appearances, amassing more playing time (2,205 minutes) than any other Leipzig midfielder and contributing five goals and 10 assists as Leipzig finished second to Bayern Munich. Though injuries hampered his next two seasons, his return from a knee injury in 2022/23 coincided with Leipzig’s resurgence, leading to a third-place Bundesliga finish and a second consecutive DFB-Pokal win.
Olmo’s form continued to improve in 2023/24, starting the season with a hat-trick against Bayern Munich, which secured back-to-back wins at the Allianz Arena and Leipzig’s first Supercup victory. He finished the campaign with eight goals, his best tally since moving to Germany. On the international stage, he scored his 10th goal for Spain and his second of UEFA Euro 2024 as Spain eliminated hosts Germany in the quarter-finals. He assisted the winning goal in extra time and then scored the decisive goal in the semi-final against France. Olmo played the entire final, making a crucial last-minute goal-line clearance, as Spain defeated England 2-1, setting the stage for a triumphant return to Barcelona.
