Kate Martin’s Surprising Rookie Journey with the Las Vegas Aces

Kate Martin’s selection as the 18th overall pick in the second round by the as Vegas Aces was a major surprise. Initially, she likely attended the draft ceremony to support her former Iowa teammate, Caitlin Clark, who was the No. 1 pick. Four months into her unexpected rookie contract with the Aces, Martin is still grappling with the challenge of proving her worth in the league.

On August 23rd, Martin discussed her WNBA season with Iowa News Now host Owen Siebring. While she is focused on helping her team reach the playoffs, Martin is also working hard to adjust to the professional level. ckly highlights your weaknesses, but it also reveals your strengths,” Martin noted.

She recognizes the need to improve her ball-handling skills and ability to navigate around quick defenders, as the league’s players are generally bigger, faster, and stronger.

Currently, Martin’s efforts are geared toward catching the attention of Aces coach Becky Hammon. Before the Olympics, she averaged 13 minutes per game, with 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds. However, post-Olympics, her playing time has been limited.

In recent games, Martin has seen limited action, playing just three minutes in two of the last three games, including a game against the New York Liberty where she secured a rebound but did not score. Despite this, she has notable strengths, including a 39.6% shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

Martin’s shooting skills are evident, but her limited court time has restricted her ability to fully showcase her talent. Her longest stint on the court was 32 minutes in a game against the Sparks, where she made all three of her three-point attempts and scored 13 points.

Although her current playing time is minimal, Martin remains dedicated to refining her game and being a valuable teammate. She emphasizes that she focuses more on her execution and improvement rather than stats. Coach Hammon acknowledges Martin’s meticulous approach and reliability.

Despite the challenges, Martin’s potential is recognized by fans, as evidenced by her jersey being one of the top sellers in the league. Will Martin overcome her current hurdles and achieve her goals? Share your thoughts below!
