Following in the footsteps of Erling Haaland and Sadio Mané, Benjamin Šeško is the latest prolific striker to emerge from Red Bull Salzburg and is now making waves in the Bundesliga. How far can the RB Leipzig forward go? Based on his performances so far, the answer seems to be very far. Just avoid comparing him to Manchester City’s Norwegian superstar.
Šeško’s transfer to Leipzig was finalized in the summer of 2022, but he remained at Salzburg for an additional season, developing and preparing to take over from players like Christopher Nkunku and Dominik Szoboszlai. This arrangement helped him secure a third Austrian league title and allowed the 20-year-old to hit the ground running when he crossed the border and took a step up in competition.
“Benjamin Šeško is one of the top young talents in the game and has tremendous potential to become a top player. He possesses all the qualities needed for that,” said Leipzig’s sporting director, Christopher Vivell, who convinced a 16-year-old Šeško to sign for Salzburg from Slovenian side Domžale in 2019.
“This is the perfect next step for me,” Šeško said when leaving Salzburg, after scoring 16 goals in 30 league matches last season. His solid return of nine goals in his first 26 appearances for Leipzig indicates both sides were right to trust in his potential with a five-year contract.
