Xabi Alonso ends recent speculation linking him to Liverpool and Bayern Munich by committing his future to Bayer Leverkusen

Once again, Bayer Leverkusen posted impressive numbers over the weekend. They outplayed their visitors, RB Leipzig, in nearly every metric: 26 shots to Leipzig’s eight, 18 corners to two, and 62% possession. Yet, the figure that stands out the most is much larger.

Four hundred and sixty-two. That’s the number of days since Die Werkself’s last Bundesliga loss—until Saturday, when Leipzig accomplished what Borussia Mönchengladbach couldn’t on the season’s opening night. Like Gladbach, Marco Rose’s side overcame a 2-0 deficit against the champions. But this time, they capitalized on their momentum, with Loïs Openda sealing the comeback with a powerful winner after his equalizer. Leipzig now holds the longest unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga, spanning 13 matches. Leverkusen, meanwhile, suffered their first domestic defeat since losing a meaningless match to Bochum at the end of the 2022-23 season, ending an incredible 43-game unbeaten run across the Bundesliga, Pokal, and Super Cup.

Some suggest this might come as a relief to Xabi Alonso, allowing him to refocus on the more critical objectives rather than chasing statistical milestones. After all, no one wants to be like the 2016 Golden State Warriors, who set records during the regular season only to finish trophyless. Leverkusen, with three trophies already on display in the club’s reception from this year’s successes, have become too ambitious and hungry for more to dwell on minor details.
