2024 Season: Eliminated on Sept. 11, last in AL West
Here’s a breakdown of the Los Angeles Angels’ 2024 season, the key issues they need to address in the offseason, and an early preview of 2025.

Highlights
Despite a tough season, some young players offered a glimpse of hope for the Angels’ future. Zach Neto had a strong second year, reaching the 20-20 mark and proving reliable at shortstop, both offensively and defensively. Logan O’Hoppe continued his development as a power hitter and demonstrated his ability to manage a heavy workload behind the plate. Nolan Schanuel, the Angels’ 2023 first-round pick, showcased his on-base prowess in the second half of the season.

On the pitching side, Tyler Anderson had a rebound year, defying expectations. José Soriano transitioned from the bullpen to the rotation, impressing with his fastball velocity and consistency. Ben Joyce emerged as a key bullpen arm, dazzling fans with his high radar readings.

Challenges
Mike Trout’s injury troubles once again topped the list of challenges. After a promising start with 10 homers in 29 games, Trout required knee surgery, played only one rehab game, and was shut down for a second surgery. Trout ended the season with just 29 games played, continuing a trend of missing significant time over the last four seasons.

Anthony Rendon also faced health issues for the fifth consecutive season, playing less than half the team’s games and putting up career-worst numbers when healthy. Rendon still has two years left on his seven-year contract worth $38 million per season. Brandon Drury’s performance at the plate also nosedived, finishing with a single-digit home run total after hitting 54 homers in the previous two seasons.

On the mound, Patrick Sandoval, the Opening Day starter, struggled with a 5.08 ERA before undergoing surgery for a torn UCL. Reid Detmers, after strong seasons in 2022 and 2023, had a rough start to 2024, posting a 6.14 ERA in 12 starts before being demoted. Robert Stephenson, who was expected to bolster the bullpen, missed the entire season due to Tommy John surgery.

Offseason Outlook
The Angels’ offseason revolves around the future of Mike Trout. Though he’s one of the greatest players of his generation, he may no longer fit with the team’s youth-driven trajectory. Trout has six years remaining on his contract, with a no-trade clause complicating any potential moves. However, the Angels may consider trading him to a contender while eating part of his salary to facilitate the deal.

Aside from Trout, several positions appear set for 2025. O’Hoppe is locked in behind the plate, Schanuel at first base, and Neto at shortstop. Taylor Ward will hold down left field, and while Jo Adell hasn’t fully realized his potential, he did enough to likely secure right field for next season. Luis Rengifo’s versatility will be crucial in covering second and third base, especially with Rendon’s unreliability.
