Liverpool had been eager to acquire a new midfielder this summer, with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as their main target. However, after Zubimendi chose to stay at Reale Arena, Liverpool decided not to pursue any alternative midfield options.
Looking ahead, Liverpool plans to pursue a new midfielder next year, and a promising candidate has emerged: Sunderland’s Chris Rigg. According to GiveMeSport, Liverpool is closely monitoring Rigg’s progress and may consider making a move for him in January or next summer.
The 17-year-old is open to leaving Sunderland if the timing and offer are right. Liverpool will face strong competition for his signature, with Zubimendi, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund also keeping an eye on him.
Having progressed through Sunderland’s youth ranks, the young player made his senior debut last season, netting twice in eight starts in the Championship.
Sunderland has begun the new season strongly, winning all four of their matches, and Rigg has been part of every game, starting in three of them.
Rigg is a versatile player capable of performing in various midfield roles and can also contribute in the attacking third if required.
Liverpool has been a strong platform for young talents to demonstrate their abilities at the top level, with players like Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Conor Bradley among those who have flourished.
All of these players have become key figures in the first team, and Chris Rigg could follow a similar trajectory if he joins Liverpool next year.
