The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract this summer, aiming to secure a regular place in Sunderland’s first-team plans at the Stadium of Light.

Known for promoting young talent, the Black Cats have upheld this reputation by giving Rigg significant playing time. The midfielder has appeared in all four of Sunderland’s opening Championship matches, starting three, including a 1-0 victory over recently-relegated Burnley on August 24.

Since Regis Le Bris took over in the summer, the North-East club has experienced a major resurgence and now sits at the top of the Championship standings.

According to HITC, Champions League holders Real Madrid are reportedly keen on signing Sunderland’s Chris Rigg in the near future.

The report suggests that Los Blancos consider the 17-year-old to be one of the brightest talents in Europe right now, following his standout performances for the Black Cats.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team reportedly sees Rigg following a similar path to Jude Bellingham, who also began his senior career in the Championship. Bellingham rose to prominence at Birmingham City, becoming a regular starter under Pep Clotet during the 2019-20 season.

In addition to Real Madrid, German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund is also said to be monitoring Rigg’s development ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Before signing a professional contract at the Stadium of Light this summer, Rigg was reportedly given the chance to join a Premier League club.

The 17-year-old is said to have turned down offers from both Manchester United and Newcastle United before deciding to commit his immediate future to Sunderland.

However, several Premier League clubs are still believed to be monitoring Rigg, who could follow a similar path to Archie Gray and Adam Wharton in making the jump from the Championship to the Premier League.
