Danny Drinkwater has officially announced his retirement from football. The 33-year-old midfielder was a key player in Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League title win in 2016, which earned him a high-profile move to Chelsea the following year.

However, he struggled to secure a regular spot in the Chelsea starting lineup, leading to disappointing loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa, along with off-field issues. In 2019, Drinkwater pleaded guilty to drink-driving after a car crash, suffered an ankle injury in a nightclub altercation later that year, and was involved in a training ground incident where he headbutted Aston Villa teammate Jota in 2020. His last competitive appearances were on loan at Reading during the 2021-22 season, after which his Chelsea contract expired.

Speaking on the High Performance Podcast, Drinkwater reflected on his decision: “It’s been a long time coming, especially over the past year, but I think it’s time to make it official. I’ve been in limbo, wanting to play but not finding the right opportunity where I felt valued. I’m content whether I’m playing or not, so do I just part ways with football?”

He added, “Football has been my life since I was six or seven years old. It was never going to be an easy decision. If I had been playing regularly and had to stop due to injury or age, it might have been even harder.”
