Breaking News: Patrick Mahomes has officially announced his departure to…
At just 29, Patrick Mahomes has already achieved more than the vast majority of NFL players ever will. However, there’s still room for growth.
In Sunday’s 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Mahomes didn’t have his best performance. He threw for only 151 yards, and while he scored two touchdowns, he also had two interceptions. As Kansas City eyes a potential first-ever Super Bowl three-peat in 2024, Mahomes is being reminded that his play against Cincinnati wasn’t up to par.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed frustration with the team’s turnovers when speaking with CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson at halftime, as Kansas City trailed 16-10. Despite the narrow victory, Reid emphasized that the Chiefs were fortunate to win, thanks in part to a late defensive pass interference call in their favor and surviving three turnovers.
Reid reiterated this concern during his press conference, as the Chiefs prepare for their Week 3 game against Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons. Kansas City has turned the ball over four times in two games, and while they’ve won both, Reid knows that to secure another Super Bowl, the team needs to clean up their play and eliminate mistakes.
“Turnovers will finish you. They rarely give you a chance to win. We got the win, but we need to handle business better,” Reid said.
Mahomes’ aggressive style often leads to risky plays, and although many of his interceptions in recent years were negated by penalties, he threw a career-high 14 interceptions last season and already has three this year. Up next, he’ll face the Atlanta defense, aiming to lead the Chiefs to a 3-0 start, no doubt motivated by Reid’s challenge.
