After a summer where Dani Olmo showcased himself as one of Europe’s top playmakers, his departure could have caused concern at RB Leipzig. However, the Bundesliga side viewed the transfer as validation of their strategy, which has turned them into a hub for developing young talent.

Olmo’s £51m move to Barcelona followed his standout performance in Euro 2024 with Spain, where he was joint top-scorer, and capped off four successful years at Leipzig after joining from Dinamo Zagreb.

He now joins a prestigious list of players brought in, developed, and sold for significant profits within the Red Bull system. Leipzig has now cashed in over £50m on four players in the past two years, including Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool, Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea, and Josko Gvardiol’s record £77m move to Manchester City.

For Marcel Schafer, RB Leipzig’s new managing director of sport, the sales of Olmo and defender Mohamed Simakan, who moved to Al-Nassr for £29m, were seen as opportunities rather than setbacks.

In response, the club brought in highly-rated 19-year-old winger Antonio Nusa, promising midfielders Assan Ouedraogo and Arthur Vermeeren on loan, as well as goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt and defender Lutsharel Geertruida—all for £30m less than the club earned from summer transfers.

Schafer remarked: “After the transfer window, I felt players want to come to Leipzig because of the examples set by the likes of Olmo, Gvardiol, Szoboszlai, Nkunku, and others. The club is seen as a place of immense potential, perfect for developing top young talents, not just in Germany but across Europe.”
