The Michigan State defensive back became the legal guardian of his four youngest siblings on Sept. 11, according to The Associated Press, and has been juggling caring for all five of his siblings since his mother’s death in August.
“My cards were given to me,” Smith told The Associated Press in an interview published on Sept. 23. “I didn’t choose my deck of cards.”
Gala Gilliam, Smith’s mother, was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in October 2022, according to a GoFundMe fundraiser. She underwent multiple major surgeries and experienced blood clots, infections and a decline in the function of her liver.
At 41 years old, she was given a terminal prognosis and was given three to six months to live by her oncologist, according to the GoFundMe.
“Gala is not just a daughter, sister, mother, or friend; she is a fighter and she’s facing the toughest battle of her life,” the GoFundMe stated
