Welcome Back Again: Giovani Lo Celso Is Back………………….read more.
Tottenham Hotspur has announced the departure of midfielder Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis.
Lo Celso initially joined Spurs from Betis in 2019 amid much excitement, following the club’s journey to the UEFA Champions League final, alongside Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon, and Jack Clarke.
However, the Argentine struggled with fitness and had difficulty adapting to English football, making 108 appearances for Tottenham during his five years at the club. He scored 11 goals, with his last coming in a dramatic 3-3 draw against Manchester City in December 2023.
Throughout his time at Spurs, Lo Celso was never a regular starter under any of the five managers he worked with: Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, Ryan Mason, Antonio Conte, and Ange Postecoglou, and he leaves the club on a permanent deal.
He returns to Spain after becoming a fan favorite at Betis during a successful 2018/19 season and had a loan spell at Villarreal from 2022 to 2023.
Reports indicate that as part of the agreement between Spurs and Betis, Tottenham has a “priority option” to sign promising midfielder Johnny Cardoso. If they choose not to pursue this option, they will still hold a sell-on clause for the USA international.
