This marks Costa’s 12th club in his career, which began in February 2006 with Braga. After a loan spell at Penafiel, he moved to Atlético Madrid in December 2006, though he stayed at Braga until season’s end, failing to score in seven appearances.

Dubbed the “new Kaka” by Atlético president Enrique Cerezo, Costa debuted for the club in August 2007 but was loaned to Celta Vigo shortly after. He became a regular at Celta and enjoyed a successful season-long loan.

After additional loan stints at Albacete and Real Valladolid, Costa was finally given a chance with Atlético’s first team ahead of the 2010/11 season. Initially a backup for Sergio Agüero and Diego Forlán, Costa forced his way into the starting XI by season’s end.

A serious knee injury sidelined him for six months in 2011, and he went on loan to Vallecano to regain fitness, scoring 10 goals in 16 appearances. His form earned him a key role at Atlético upon his return, where he scored 20 goals during the 2012/13 season, helping the club win the Copa del Rey. Costa then netted 36 goals in 52 games in 2013/14, as Atlético claimed the La Liga title and reached the Champions League final.

That stellar season earned Costa a big move to Chelsea, where he played a pivotal role in their two Premier League title victories in three years, scoring 59 goals in 120 appearances.

Costa returned to Atlético Madrid in 2018 but was less influential during his second spell, managing just 19 goals in 81 appearances before moving to Atlético Mineiro in Brazil. After a brief stint at Mineiro, Costa returned to the Premier League with Wolves in September 2022, scoring his first goal for the club in April 2023. He left Wolves after the 2022/23 season, having netted once in 25 appearances.
