1. FC Union Berlin is starting preparations for the new season with a new head coach. From July 1st, Bo Svensson will take charge of the men’s first team.

The 44-year-old Dane has had a successful career as a player, having played 291 games for FC København, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and 1. FSV Mainz 05, and making three appearances for the Danish national team.

After retiring as a player in the summer of 2015, Svensson began his coaching career at Mainz 05, initially as an assistant coach under Martin Schmidt, before coaching various youth teams.

Following a successful season with the U19s, Svensson moved to FC Liefering in Austria’s 2nd division in the summer of 2019. In January 2021, he returned to Mainz 05, which was second from the bottom of the table with six points after 14 games. Under his management, Mainz had the best second half of a season in their Bundesliga history, finishing 12th with 39 points. In the next two seasons, Mainz finished 8th and 9th under Svensson’s leadership.

Svensson’s time with Mainz ended in November 2023 when he announced his resignation as head coach.

“In close consultation with Oliver Ruhnert and Horst Heldt, we decided on a new sporting direction for the summer and believe that Bo Svensson is a great fit for our club,” said Dirk Zingler, President of 1. FC Union Berlin. “I look forward to working with him and am confident he can help us play a significant role in the Bundesliga.”

“I have been following Union for a long time and believe I will find good conditions here for successful work,” Svensson said of his new role. “The unity and togetherness between the team, fans, staff, and club management at Union is very important. I look forward to the journey ahead and will do everything to ensure we have a successful season.”
