Álvaro Morata has completed a permanent transfer to AC Milan from Atlético Madrid, as announced by the Serie A club on Friday.
Morata, who led Spain to victory in Euro 2024, underwent a medical and signed a four-year contract with Milan. The 31-year-old scored 46 goals in 117 appearances for Atlético after initially joining on loan from Chelsea in January 2019.
Morata’s move surprised many, given he had recently shared an Instagram post wearing an Atlético jersey, expressing his dedication to the club. Despite this, he had voiced frustration over a lack of respect from the media and fans in Spain during the European Championship.
Reflecting on his decision to leave Atlético, Morata mentioned he felt he couldn’t give his best at his previous club. Speaking to Sky Italia, he cited the trust from Zlatan Ibrahimović, the squad, and the coach as key factors in choosing Milan. He also expressed excitement about playing in Serie A again, noting the respect he received from Italians.
With French forward Olivier Giroud having left for LAFC, Morata is expected to get more playing time at Milan. He previously enjoyed a successful spell at Juventus, winning multiple league titles and Coppa Italia trophies before returning to Atlético in the summer of 2022.
