The Los Angeles Lakers have announced the arrival of their new coach, JJ Redick.
The Los Angeles Lakers officially introduced JJ Redick as their new head coach on Monday. Redick, a former NBA player with 15 seasons under his belt, is widely recognized for his sharpshooting skills during his time with six teams, including the Los Angeles Clippers. He has also made a name for himself as a broadcaster, analyst, and podcaster, co-hosting “Mind the Game” with Lakers star LeBron James.
However, General Manager Rob Pelinka clarified that Redick’s selection wasn’t primarily driven by his connection with James. Instead, the focus was on Redick’s potential to contribute to the development of the younger Lakers roster.
Pelinka emphasized, “It became clear that one of JJ’s passions lies in bringing his basketball expertise and content creation to player development. This approach aligns with our goal of combining Lakers excellence with innovative strategies and meticulous attention to detail on the court.”
Despite the skepticism surrounding his lack of coaching experience, Redick acknowledged the challenge, describing the process as “surreal.” He humorously addressed the media, saying, “I don’t know if you guys heard, but I haven’t coached in the NBA before,” while also highlighting his desire to help players and contribute to the Lakers organization.
Redick was chosen for the role after UConn head coach Dan Hurley declined the position earlier this month. He succeeds Darvin Ham, who was dismissed after two seasons following a first-round playoff exit earlier this year.
