After a draw and a loss in their first two matches, AC Milan headed to Rome with hopes of securing their first win of the season against Lazio.

Paulo Fonseca made some adjustments to his starting lineup following the defeat in Parma. He notably introduced new signings Emerson Royal and Youssouf Fofana for their first starts, while opting to bench Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez—a bold decision.

These changes seemed promising in the first half, as Milan led 1-0 at the break. While the Rossoneri didn’t dominate, they managed to keep Lazio at bay and scored through Pavlovic, marking his first goal in the red and black.

However, things unraveled in the second half. Lazio equalized in the 62nd minute through Taty Castellanos and completed their comeback in the 66th minute with a goal from Boulaye Dia.

Leao, Theo, and recent summer signing Tammy Abraham were all subbed on around the 70th minute, and they combined effectively, with Leao leveling the score at 2-2.

Emerson Royal made his first start of the season, taking Davide Calabria’s place in the lineup after Calabria faced criticism for his recent poor performances. The Brazilian was expected to raise the level of play on the right flank, but the reality fell short of expectations.

Emerson turned out to be the weakest player on the field, offering nothing in attack and being defensively shaky. He failed to mark his opponent on both goals, giving them ample time and space to set up a teammate in the box.

After coming on as a substitute in the previous match against Parma, Emerson started this game but has yet to make a positive impact. Unless he improves his performance, it seems that the right flank will continue to be a problem area for Milan this season.
