Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin not only formed a dominant duo during their time with the Iowa Hawkeyes, but they also became best friends. After parting ways following the 2024 WNBA Draft, they’re set to reunite on the court in an upcoming two-game series between the Indiana Fever and the Las Vegas Aces, and Clark couldn’t be more excited.
While the Fever and Aces have already faced off twice this season, with Las Vegas coming out on top both times, Clark still cherishes every opportunity to play against her best friend.
The two shared a locker room for four years and reached two NCAA finals together, though they never secured the championship title. Despite this, the bond they built remains stronger than ever. Before each game, Clark always offers words of encouragement to Martin.
Reflecting on their friendship, Clark commented, “It’s amazing to see one of your best friends living out her dream and then facing her on the court, but it’s also a little strange for both of us.”
Fun is always part of the experience for Clark and Martin. In a recent media session, Clark admitted it’s been an adjustment to play as opponents now. “We were teammates for four years, and we got so used to that. Going up against each other now… we joke about it, but it definitely takes some getting used to.”
Despite the competitive nature, Clark enjoys reuniting with Martin whenever their teams meet. “It’s fun for us, and for the fans in the Midwest who supported us during college,” she said.
Though the Aces and Fever are ranked fourth and sixth in the WNBA standings, there’s no rivalry between the two friends. Clark expressed her pride in Martin, saying, “I’m super proud of her. She’s one of the hardest workers, an incredible teammate, and leader. It’s great to see her having success.”
However, when the two face off this Wednesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Clark will be determined to lead her team to victory after two losses to Las Vegas. In their previous meetings, the Fever lost 99-80 and 88-69, with Clark scoring eight points and seven assists in the first game, and 13 points with 11 assists in the second. Martin contributed 12 points and seven rebounds in the first game but played limited minutes in the second.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown between these top rookies, as Clark and Martin look forward to meeting on the court once more and putting their skills to the test.
