Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou stated that the club can afford to lose England defender Eric Dier, who has been linked with a transfer to Bayern Munich.

The 29-year-old Dier has made 49 appearances for the England national team but has struggled to secure a first-team spot at Tottenham this season. German reports indicate that he is nearing a move to the Bundesliga champions.

Dier was absent from Spurs’ 1-0 FA Cup victory over Burnley, and Postecoglou told ITV he was unaware of any transfer developments, emphasizing that the player was injured. When asked about Dier’s situation during a tense press conference, Postecoglou responded, “He pulled up sore and didn’t train yesterday.”

He further insisted, “It’s a separate issue; don’t question my integrity. When I say he’s injured, he’s injured. He didn’t train yesterday; you can ask him. It has nothing to do with anything else. If he wasn’t injured, I’d simply say he isn’t selected; that would be easier for me to explain.”

In response to inquiries about any potential transfer news, he said, “It’s not on my radar, and if there’s something, I’ll be informed. To be fair, I’ve been focused on the game and the players available for the last 24 hours.”

If Dier were to join Bayern Munich, he would reunite with Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer Harry Kane, who transferred to the Bundesliga in August for an initial £86.4 million and has since netted 25 goals in 22 appearances across competitions.

Dier arrived at Tottenham in 2014 for £4 million from Sporting Lisbon and has since played 274 matches in the Premier League. However, he has started only one league game this season, despite injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, the latter being an unused substitute against Burnley after returning from a hamstring injury sustained during a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on November 6.

Full-back Ben Davies was utilized in a central role, playing the full 90 minutes against Burnley, but Postecoglou noted that Davies had been battling a hamstring issue towards the end of the match. When asked if he could manage without Dier following Davies’ injury, Postecoglou replied, “Yes.”

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson commented on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating, “It’s significant for him, but it’s clear he’s not part of Ange’s plans. Looking at how Postecoglou has set up this season, even with injuries to Romero and Van de Ven, Dier hasn’t been selected. He’s opted to use four full-backs as centre-halves. If Eric Dier can’t get into that team, it says a lot. A move to Bayern Munich at this stage isn’t a bad opportunity.”

Tottenham, currently fifth in the Premier League, will next face Manchester United away on January 14. Bayern Munich is sitting second in the Bundesliga, four points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen, but with a game in hand as they pursue their 12th consecutive German championship.
