The Carolina Hurricanes acquire forward Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins via a trade.

The Carolina Hurricanes have fulfilled the desires of many fans by making a bold and significant move ahead of the NHL trade deadline. They have announced the acquisition of forward Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins, aiming to enhance their offensive capabilities and bolster their chances of winning the 2024 Stanley Cup. In exchange, Carolina has sent forward Michael Bunting, forward Vasili Ponamarev, along with prospects Ville Koivunen and Cruz Lucius to the Penguins. Additionally, Pittsburgh will receive a conditional 2024 first-round draft pick and a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick. As part of the deal, the Hurricanes have also acquired defenseman Ty Smith, a former first-round pick by the New Jersey Devils in 2018, who has amassed 123 games of NHL experience despite primarily playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL over the past two seasons. However, it was Guentzel whom the Hurricanes were primarily targeting, and they successfully secured his services. With 58 points in 58 career playoff games, including 34 goals, Guentzel is the player that Carolina truly coveted.
