Joy McCorvey, previously an assistant coach for the Lady Vols, secures her inaugural head coaching position at Stony Brook.

Joy McCorvey, a former assistant coach for the Lady Vols basketball team, has secured her first head coaching position. Stony Brook announced McCorvey’s appointment as the new women’s basketball coach on Monday. McCorvey had spent the previous three seasons on the staff of former coach Kellie Harper at Tennessee. Following Harper’s termination on April 1 after five seasons, McCorvey was not retained by the new coach, Kim Caldwell.

McCorvey will become the 11th coach in Stony Brook’s program history. Stony Brook’s athletic director, Shawn Heilbron, expressed enthusiasm about McCorvey’s hiring in a statement released by the school, stating, “I am thrilled to welcome Joy to the Stony Brook family as our new women’s basketball coach. She emerged as the top candidate from a highly competitive pool and is well-equipped to lead our program into the future. With her vibrant personality and extensive basketball knowledge, she is poised to have an immediate impact. Importantly, she is genuinely invested in the overall experience of our student-athletes and will motivate our women to excel both on and off the court.”

McCorvey’s tenure as an assistant coach spanned 13 seasons, during which her teams amassed a record of 286-143. They achieved notable success, making 12 postseason appearances, including eight NCAA Tournaments and four WNITs. McCorvey also contributed to Michigan’s victory in the WNIT championship. Before joining the Lady Vols, she spent three seasons at Florida State, serving as the associate head coach during her final year on Sue Semrau’s staff.

Expressing her gratitude, McCorvey stated in a statement released by the school, “I am honored and humbled to assume the role of head women’s basketball coach at Stony Brook University. I am thankful to Shawn Heilbron, his team, and President McInnis for entrusting me with the responsibility of leading this program. Stony Brook exemplifies excellence both academically and athletically, and I am excited to contribute to its legacy of success.”

McCorvey embarked on her coaching journey at her alma mater, St. John’s, where she played under coach Kim Barnes Arico from 2006 to 2010. Following her graduation, she joined Barnes Arico’s coaching staff in 2011 before transitioning to Michigan when Barnes Arico assumed the head coaching position there in 2012. McCorvey remained with the Wolverines until 2018 before joining the coaching staff at Florida State.
