Moving forward is the sole direction: Docherty reflects on his journey through injury.
Sam Docherty received numerous well wishes from not only Carlton supporters but also from the broader football community after his injury in the opening round. He acknowledges that some discussions arose about the possibility of him calling time on his 12-year career, given everything he’s endured. However, Docherty firmly rejects this notion.
The news of his injury, including meniscus damage and a torn ACL in his right knee (the opposite knee that sidelined him for two years in 2018 and 2019), arrived on a Saturday evening after Carlton’s impressive comeback victory over Brisbane.
In an interview on AFL360, Docherty expressed his unwavering determination to return to the game. Retirement has never crossed his mind; instead, his focus is on making a comeback.
“No, I’m too stubborn. There’s something in my character that drives me to finish my career on my own terms and in my own way. That time is not now,” Docherty asserted.
Despite facing challenges throughout his AFL career, Docherty still loves the game and believes he can perform at a high level when healthy. He is determined to retire on his own terms, without an injury or illness dictating his exit from the sport.
“There have been numerous occasions in my career where I could have walked away, but the drive to leave AFL football with my head held high is a decision I’m completely comfortable with,” Docherty concluded.
